Is Glucose Syrup in Australia the same as Light corn syrup in America?

I am making water colour paint cakes and the recipe calls for corn syrup. I live in Australia so dont have access to corn syrup, but I do have access to Glucose syrup. Is this the same or a good substitute for the corn syrup? and does anyone know why I need syrup in this paint, what is its purpose?
